The Forest – Steam (account provided)

The Forest is the horror survival game by Endnight Games that largely helped define the genre on PC. After your plane crash, you wake up alone on a wooded peninsula, your son abducted before your eyes. The daytime is devoted to ordinary survival: felling trees, building a shelter, hunting, purifying water, crafting tools. At night, the island's inhabitants — a tribe of mutant cannibals — approach your camp and the mood shifts completely.

What awaits you

• Construction log by log — from the makeshift hut to the fortress on stilts, with traps and palisades.
• Enemies that study you — the cannibals spot your defences, get around your traps and react to your behaviour.
• Cave network — the most horrifying part of the game, where the key equipment and most of the story are found.
• Vital needs — hunger, thirst, energy, temperature and injuries to manage relentlessly.
