McAfee AntiVirus 2024 is McAfee's entry-level offer: core antivirus protection for one PC for one year. It leaves out the extra services of the Internet Security and Total Protection suites, so there is no VPN and no password manager. It suits a single computer where a straightforward, lightweight detection engine is all that is needed. Threat definition updates are provided for the whole duration of the licence.
What the protection covers
- Real-time antivirus: continuous scanning of files that are opened, downloaded or received by e-mail, with blocking before execution.
- Ransomware protection: detects attempts to encrypt many documents at once and stops them.
- Firewall: filters the incoming and outgoing connections of your computer.
- WebAdvisor: a browser extension that flags dangerous sites and phishing links in search results.
- Scheduled scans: full-disk checks planned for idle hours so they do not slow down your work.
What to know before ordering
This licence is for a PC running Windows 11, 10 or 8.1; it does not cover phones, tablets or Mac computers. Plan on about 2 GB of RAM, 500 MB of free disk space and a permanent internet connection, since McAfee relies partly on cloud analysis to identify recent threats. The product is the 2024 generation of the software.
Activation and delivery
The activation key is sent by e-mail within 24 hours of payment. Create a McAfee account, enter the code in the subscription section, then download the installer linked to your account and run it on your PC. The 12 months start when the key is activated.
