Hollow Knight, from Team Cherry, is a 2D action and exploration game of the metroidvania kind. It takes place in Hallownest, a vast underground kingdom of insects ravaged by an infection. You control a small, silent character armed with a nail, who descends ever deeper into very different areas: flooded cities, crystal mines, overgrown gardens and foul sewers. The game does not guide you. There are no markers and no quest log, and even the map has to be bought area by area from a cartographer you must first track down.
What the game offers
- Interconnected exploration: a huge map where new abilities open shortcuts and regions that were out of reach.
- Demanding combat: nail strikes, spells, dodges and rebounds, with boss fights known for their difficulty.
- A charm system: amulets equipped in a limited number of slots, which shape your play style.
- Recovery after death: you have to return to the spot where you fell to get back what you lost.
- Hand-drawn visuals: scenery and animation drawn frame by frame, set to a score of piano and strings.
