Battlefield 1 takes the series back to the First World War, a setting few shooters have explored. Expect bolt-action rifles, heavy machine guns, slow and noisy early tanks, biplanes and even cavalry. The game is known for its large-scale multiplayer battles, environments that crumble under bombardment and dynamic weather, where fog or a storm can change the course of a match. The solo campaign is divided into standalone war stories, each following a different character on a different front.
- Large-scale Conquest: dozens of players, objectives to capture and land and air vehicles on the same map.
- Operations: a multi-round mode that replays the advance or retreat of a front across a chain of maps.
- Destructible environments: villages, trenches and buildings that fall apart as the match goes on.
- Period vehicles: tanks, light armour, biplanes, airships, battleships and horses.
- Four classes: assault, medic, support and scout, with clearly different roles inside the squad.
