VMware Workstation Pro 17 – Desktop virtualisation licence (Windows 11, DirectX 12)

VMware Workstation Pro 17 is the most recent version of VMware's desktop hypervisor. It runs several Windows, Linux or BSD virtual machines in parallel on a single Windows or Linux computer, without touching the host system. It is the tool of choice for developers, administrators, trainers and security analysts who need a complete laboratory on their workstation.

What version 17 brings over version 16

• Windows 11 fully supported as a guest — a mature virtual trusted platform module (vTPM 2.0) and UEFI secure boot, which allows Windows 11 to be installed and updated in a VM without workarounds.
• DirectX 12 and OpenGL 4.3 — noticeably more modern graphics rendering than the DirectX 11 of version 16, useful for 3D applications and demanding interfaces.
• Partial encryption of virtual machines — only the sensitive files are encrypted, which significantly speeds up operations.
• Recent guest systems — Windows 11, Windows Server 2022, Ubuntu 22.04 and later, RHEL 9, Debian 12, and a redesigned interface on Linux hosts.

The underlying features

• Snapshots and clones — save the state of a VM before any risky operation, roll back in a few seconds, duplicate an environment as a linked clone without consuming space.
• Advanced virtual networks — isolated segments, simulation of latency and packet loss, a complete virtual network editor.
• Containers and Kubernetes — the vctl tool builds and runs containers and deploys a local cluster.
• Connection to vSphere / ESXi — administration of remote servers and transfer of virtual machines.
• Up to 32 virtual processors and 128 GB of memory per VM.
