Windows 8.1 Pro is the refined follow-up to Windows 8. It brought back the Start button, let you boot straight to the Desktop, improved the touch interface and offered a complete set of professional features. This Retail licence covers 1 PC.
Before you buy
Microsoft no longer supports Windows 8.1, and no security updates are released for it. We do not recommend it as a main workstation connected to the Internet. The licence is intended for the specific needs below.
Where it still makes sense
- Hardware from around 2012 to 2015, such as tablets and ultraportables that never received drivers for Windows 10 or 11.
- Virtual machines for checking software compatibility in an 8.1 environment.
- Business software certified for Windows 8.1, on a workstation kept off the network or tightly filtered.
- Computer-controlled equipment such as kiosks, terminals and devices whose control software has not changed.
What the Pro edition offers
- BitLocker and BitLocker To Go to encrypt the disk and removable media.
- Incoming Remote Desktop, so the PC accepts remote connections.
- Hyper-V client, built-in virtualisation on 64-bit systems.
- Domain join and group policy for use with a corporate directory.
- Booting from a VHD and the EFS encrypting file system.
- A hybrid interface with a tiled Start screen, a Start button, direct boot to the Desktop and unified search.
Good to know before you order
- 1 GHz processor with PAE, NX and SSE2 support
- 1 GB of RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB (64-bit)
- 16 GB of disk space (20 GB for 64-bit)
- DirectX 9 graphics card with a WDDM 1.0 driver
