Windows 7 Ultimate was the top edition of Windows 7. It combined everything in the Pro edition and added BitLocker and the multilingual language packs. This Retail licence covers 1 PC.

Windows 7 is out of support: Microsoft no longer publishes security updates for it. A Windows 7 machine used every day on the Internet is exposed to flaws that will never be patched, so we do not suggest making it your main system. The licence is aimed at particular situations.
Where it still fits
- Virtual machines for testing, training or development in a complete Windows 7 environment.
- Older computers whose drivers exist only for this generation of Windows.
- Legacy business software certified for Windows 7 only, ideally on a PC kept off the network.
- Multilingual set-ups, since Ultimate is the edition that lets you install every interface language.
What Ultimate includes
- BitLocker and BitLocker To Go to encrypt the system disk and USB drives, which lower editions lack.
- Full language packs, with the interface switchable between 35 languages.
- Windows XP Mode, a virtualised XP environment for older applications.
- Incoming Remote Desktop, domain join and group policy, as in the professional edition.
- Booting from a VHD virtual hard disk, handy for deployment or system testing.
Good to know before you order
- 1 GHz processor, 32-bit or 64-bit
- 1 GB of RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB (64-bit)
- 16 GB of disk space (20 GB for 64-bit)
- DirectX 9 graphics card with a WDDM 1.0 driver
- A TPM chip is recommended if you use BitLocker
