Windows 10 Education N is the European "N" variant of the Education edition, supplied as a Retail licence for 1 PC. The "N" means that Windows Media Player and the related media apps are not included, a result of decisions by the European Commission. Everything else in the system is the same as the standard Education edition.
What the "N" leaves out
- Windows Media Player is absent, along with the audio and video playback and encoding components that depend on it.
- Several media apps are not installed: Groove Music, Films & TV, Voice Recorder, the Camera app and Skype.
- Possible side effect: some third-party software that relies on these codecs may refuse to start until the missing components are added.
- Remedy: Microsoft provides the Media Feature Pack free of charge as an optional feature. It restores the components in a few minutes.
What Education brings
Feature for feature, Education matches Windows 10 Enterprise: BitLocker, AppLocker, Credential Guard, Application Guard, incoming Remote Desktop, Hyper-V, Windows Sandbox, domain or Microsoft Entra ID join, Group Policy and advanced update management. Promotional content and Microsoft Store suggestions are switched off by default, and Take a Test mode can lock a workstation down during an assessment.
