Microsoft SQL Server 2019 Standard – Database server licence

Microsoft SQL Server 2019 Standard is Microsoft's relational database engine, in its edition suited to SMEs and medium-sized business applications. It runs ERPs, CRMs, management software, transactional websites and modest data warehouses, with a limit of 24 cores and 128 GB of memory per instance.

Key features

• Intelligent Query Processing — the engine corrects faulty execution plans on the fly, without changing a line of application code.
• PolyBase — query external sources (Oracle, MongoDB, Teradata, HDFS) directly in T-SQL, without copying the data.
• Always Encrypted with secure enclaves — encryption of sensitive columns while retaining searches and range comparisons.
• Columnstore indexes and in-memory tables — accelerated analytics and low-latency transactions.
• Linux and container support — SQL Server 2019 runs equally well on Windows Server as on Ubuntu, Red Hat or SUSE, and in Docker or Kubernetes.
• Accelerated database recovery — far faster restores and rollbacks of long transactions.
• Integration, Reporting and Analysis Services — ETL, reports and analytical models included.

Licensing model

Two possible models: per core, when the number of users is high or unknown (public site, exposed application), or Server + CAL, when users are few and identifiable. In this second case, each user or device accessing the database must hold a SQL Server CAL — a legal access right, separate from the server licence, which is not installed.

Installation and activation

The key arrives by e-mail within 24 hours at most. Launch the SQL Server 2019 installer, select the Standard edition and enter the product key. An existing evaluation instance can be converted via the edition upgrade wizard, without reinstallation.

System requirements

Windows Server 2016 or newer (or a supported Linux distribution), x64 1.4 GHz processor, 4 GB of RAM minimum — more depending on the load —, 6 GB of disk space. Extended support guaranteed until January 2030.
