Windows XP Home Edition is the consumer version of the system that Microsoft released in 2001 and that stayed in use for more than ten years. This is a Retail licence for 1 PC. It is meant for a fairly narrow technical audience today.
Please read before ordering
Support for Windows XP ended in 2014, and Microsoft no longer publishes security updates for it. A computer running XP and connected to the internet is exposed to many known, unpatched flaws, so it should not be used as a main system on a network. Current web browsers cannot be installed on it either.
Where this licence still makes sense
- Period hardware: computers, capture cards or peripherals whose drivers exist only for XP.
- Isolated virtual machines: an offline XP environment for running an old program.
- Older software and games: titles that do not run on current systems, even in compatibility mode.
- Archive access: opening old files in the software that created them.
What the Home edition contains
- Luna interface: the desktop and Start menu typical of Windows XP.
- Outgoing Remote Desktop only: the machine can connect to another one but cannot accept connections.
- System Restore and application compatibility features.
- No domain join, no EFS and no multiprocessor support: these were reserved for the Pro edition.

- Processor of at least 300 MHz
- 128 MB of RAM (256 MB recommended)
- 1.5 GB of available disk space
- Super VGA graphics card and display (800 x 600)
Activation and delivery
The key is entered during installation. On a system of this age, activation usually goes through Microsoft's telephone service: Windows shows an installation ID and the voice service returns a confirmation ID, so keep a phone nearby.
