Hollow Knight, developed by Team Cherry, is a 2D action and exploration game — a metroidvania — set in Hallownest, a vast underground kingdom of insects ravaged by an infection. You play a small silent character armed with a nail, who descends deeper and deeper into wholly different areas: drowned cities, crystal mines, verdant gardens, putrid canals. The game does not hold your hand: there is neither marker nor quest log and even the map must be bought area by area from a cartographer you first have to track down.
What awaits you
- Interwoven exploration — an immense map where new abilities open shortcuts and regions previously inaccessible.
- Demanding combat — nail attacks, spells, dodges and bounces, with boss fights renowned for being difficult.
- Charm system — amulets to equip in a limited number of slots, which define your play style.
- Recovery after death — you must return to the site of your fall to reclaim your lost resources.
- Hand-drawn art direction — scenery and animations drawn frame by frame, accompanied by a soundtrack of piano and strings.
