Gloomhaven is the video game adaptation, by Flaming Fowl Studios, of the board game of the same name that has become a benchmark of the genre. You lead a group of mercenaries in a dark fantasy universe, through dungeons built on hexagonal tiles. The distinctive feature of the system is that there are neither action points nor a mana gauge: each character plays two cards per turn, one of which gives the initiative and the other the main action and their card deck is gradually consumed — when they run out of cards, they are exhausted and leave the fight.
What awaits you
- Turn-based tactics — placement, range and initiative order matter as much as the raw power of the attacks.
- Hand management — every card played brings the character closer to exhaustion, which requires pacing your efforts across the whole mission.
- Very different classes — mercenaries with their own mechanics, to be unlocked as you progress through the campaign.
- Branching campaign — successful missions open up new destinations on the world map, with choices that steer what follows.
- Scripted enemies — the monsters follow an artificial intelligence based on behaviour cards, predictable but never obvious.
